Grizzly and Black Bear Viewing

The Bella Coola Valley is one of the few places where bears outnumber people.  The best time to view the bears is from August to late October when both Grizzly and Black Bears can be seen fishing along the river banks.

The pristine waters of BC’s Central Coast and the Bella Coola Valley make it a world-class fishing destination. All 5 species of Pacific Salmon return to the Valley’s rivers to spawn each year. You will also  find Cutthroat and Rainbow trout, Rocky Mountain Whitefish, Dolly Varden, and Steelhead.  Cruise the  fjord or head for the open ocean to find prawns, crabs, halibut, cod, red snapper, ling cod and rockfish.

Bird Watching

Large numbers of bald eagles and hawks live in the Bella Coola Valley year round, as do a wide variety of land and water birds including Great Blue Herons, Stella Jays, Whiskey Jacks, Hummingbirds, Red Breasted Robins, Grouse, Juncos, Buffleheads, Wrens, Fox Sparrow, Swallows, Chickadees, Coots and many varieties of Woodpeckers. The once endangered Trumpeter Swan, the largest of North America’s waterfowl, has returned to the Valley.

Experience ancient old growth forests, stunning mountain views, scenic rivers and cascading waterfalls. There are trails for every fitness level, enjoy local trails, interpretive nature trails or, the more challenging hikes Bella Coola offers. Hike to Alpine destinations including including Blue Jay Lake and Odegarrd Falls, or if you prefer, book a heli-hiking tour and fly to your hiking destination. Snowshoe tours are available in the Winter.

Ocean Tours

Mountain Biking

The Bella Coola Valley has an extensive trail system for mountain biking, some of the best trails are accessed from next door to Eagle Lodge.

Clayton Falls

Located 2km West of the Bella Coola wharf, Clayton
Falls cascades down granite cliffs. During Fall, watch salmon try to jump up the cliffs.  The viewing platform is a short stroll from the parking lot.

Norwegian Heritage Home

Visit the Norwegian Heritage home located on the Highway in Hagenborg. The home is set up as it would have appeared 100 years ago and is constucted using traditional Nowegian techniques. Bella Coola Valley Tourism operates a Visitor's Centre in the adjoining building and will be happy to arrange tours.
